New Jersey Facts

New Jersey was also a part of the original 13 colonies. It was also one of the most significant battlegrounds during the American Revolution. New Jersey bears the highest population density in the United States. It is situated in the middle of the busy Atlantic strip and settled between Pennsylvania and New York. The name New Jersey was obtained from the name of the Jersey Island in the English Channel.

Because of its majestic coastline, New Jersey has become one of the most popular tourists destinations in the U.S. It has more than 50 seaside resort towns, which include Atlantic City, Cape May and Asbury Park. New Jersey is likewise dubbed as an industrial center, and is also known as the “Garden State”. The state is the major producer of blueberries, tomatoes and cranberries.

The coat of arms of the state is positioned in the center. The shield contains three plows with a horse’s head found above it. Two women are also in the flag, which represent the goddesses of Agriculture and Liberty. There is a ribbon at the bottom, which includes the year of independence (1776), as well as the words “Liberty and Prosperity”. The state flag of New Jersey was officially adopted in 1896.

Description

New Jersey is a U.S. state located in the northeastern part and the mid-Atlantic regions. On the North and East, New York can be found while the Atlantic Ocean can be found on the southeast. The state of New Jersey is the fourth smallest state in the United States, but it is the 11th most populous in terms of population.

For over 2,800 years, New Jersey was inhabited by Native Americans. Historical tribes like the Lenape was found along the coast. The Swedes and the Dutch made the first settlements by the Europeans in the early part of the 17th century. Subsequently, the English gained control of the region. They named it the Province of New Jersey. The name came from the largest of the Channel Islands, Jersey. Also, the English granted it as a colony to John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret.

In the 18th century, New Jersey has become the place of numerous decisive battles throughout the American Revolutionary War. New Jersey also boomed in the 19th century, as the so called “Industrial Revolution” drove the state’s economy. Most of the industrial revolution success in New Jersey was possible as a result of factories erected in the cities of Paterson, Newark, Trenton, Camden and Elizabeth. Trenton is the state’s capital city, while Newark is the largest.

New Jersey is a culturally-diverse state with a large portion of urban area. Also, English is the official language of the state, spoken by 69.4% of the total population. Other spoken languages in New Jersey also include Spanish, Chinese, Korean and Indic. In terms of climate, there are two climatic conditions in New Jersey; a humid subtropical climate and a humid continental climate. The religious affiliations in New Jersey include Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism.

The political system in New Jersey is branched out into three major segments: Executive, Legislative and Judicial. It is important to take note that the Governor of New Jersey position is considered among the most powerful in the entire country. The governor was the only elective executive official across the state until 2010. New Jersey has 40 members in an upper house Senate and 80 members in a lower house General Assembly. Furthermore, New Jersey is one of the only five states that elects its state officials in years that are odd-numbered.

  • William Parker Foulke discovered the first virtually complete skeleton of a dinosaur in North America. It was unearthed in Haddonfield, New Jersey.
  • The first boardwalk in the world was created in Atlantic City in 1870 to simply reduce the amount of sand going into nearby hotels as well as railroad cars. Soon after, hotels, restaurants and shops were established along the coast. It led Atlantic City to become one of the most famous tourist spots in the U.S. Also, the boardwalk remains as the world’s longest, as of 2012, with a span of six miles.
  • One of the first even Indian reservations in the U.S. was founded in Burlington Country in 1758. It was for the Lenni-Lenape tribe.
